Enjoying Coffee on a Detox or Fast

When I place my clients on any kind of detox or fasting protocol, the number one question I get is, “can I still have coffee?” And my answer is always the same. It depends.

Whether coffee helps or hurts during a fast or detox depends on two factors: 

  1. How clean is that coffee. If we want to detoxify our body, it does not make sense to drink something filled with pesticides, mold and other chemicals that are common in most coffee brands.
  2. What you add to that coffee. Coffee itself can be quite healthy, but the average American adds sweetened creamers, sugar, and/or pasteurized dairy – all of which are a no-go on a detox.

Drinking the right coffee

Drinking the right coffee can actually be beneficial on a detox or fast, so if my clients are willing to embrace a delicious, clean coffee without all the junk added to it then I say…go for it!

Finding a clean coffee is easier said than done. Incorporating coffee into a fast or detox offers two main benefits:

When you don’t have energy, it’s hard to prepare healthy meals and get the movement you need to reach your goals. Ensuring you have the cleanest coffee possible is the first step. The second is to determine what you are going to add to your coffee for the most benefits. The beautiful thing is you can do this while transforming black coffee into an indulgent treat!

I will share my favorite recipe that I use when I am intermittent fasting, and I absolutely love it! It makes it easy for me to postpone breakfast, and it is a lifesaver for me when I am doing longer fasts.

I call it my Tuxedo Latte, which sounds fancy, but it is just a fun name for a very simple recipe! I add ½ scoop of Chocolate Collagen and ½ scoop of Vanilla Collagen to my mushroom coffee and stir well. 

The reason this is the perfect recipe for fasting and detox in my mind is because it combines a small amount of protein plus MCT oil (a super healthy fat) to fuel your cells without breaking your fast.

A combination of a ½ scoop of both Chocolate and Vanilla Collagen is only 40 calories while giving you around 8 grams of protein to help stabilize your blood sugar and curb your appetite.

how to enjoy coffee while detoxingI combine the Chocolate and Vanilla for two reasons. First, it’s delicious!
